the aural theory course
ear training for music students
Course Experience
The Aural Theory Course is designed to give students a scaffolding for successfully navigating melodic dictation and to prepare them for a college-level music theory course.
Students will receive:
- 5-6 video lectures per unit to learn critical skills for melodic and harmonic dictation and sight singing.
- Feedback on performance exercises and have
- Plentiful practice drills and assignments using the Auralia platform.
Core topics covered:
- Rhythmic dictation
- Pitch dictation
- Intervals
- Sight singing
- Melodic dictation
- Harmonic Dictation (Units 3 – 5)
Curriculum is based on moveable-do solfege and a strong affinity for knowledge of function of scale degrees.
By the end of the course, students will be transformed from experiencing aural theory as something mysterious to having the confidence and skills to know that it is something they can master.
